Surface Laptop: Microsoft’s MacBook Air!

Microsoft recently had an event last week with the focus on education. Along with software aimed at the education industry, it also announced a new laptop: the Surface Laptop!

What is the Surface Laptop?

The Surface Laptop is a laptop that Microsoft made in-house. Unlike the previous Surface devices, it’s in a clamshell form factor. Essentially, it’s a laptop through and through! NOT a 2-in-1. NOT a tablet. JUST a laptop.

Even though it’s just a laptop, Microsoft put a hint of flair with the design of their laptop. As you can see in the photo above, the keyboard and trackpad area is covered in a carpet-like surface. This is because Microsoft uses Alcantara fabric similar to the one in the Signature Type Cover for the Surface Pro 4. The burgundy color really looks sexy, to be honest.

The Surface Laptop has a 13.5″ touchscreen with PixelSense technology. It has a 3:2 aspect ratio so playing widescreen videos would be a bit weird with black bars on the top and bottom. People really don’t mind too much about that since the iPad has a 4:3 aspect ratio and they love the product.

What strikes me so much is the $999 price tag it has for the laptop with the Intel Core i5 version. To me, this is really competing with Apple’s MacBook Air. For me, this feels like a MacBook Air with a Retina Display. (To be honest, that’s my dream laptop.) Too bad I have issues with the current state of Windows and Windows 10 S puts a new wrinkle.

What is Windows 10 S?

Windows 10 S is basically just Windows 10 that’s designed for better security and performance. Those come with tradeoffs such as not being able to run apps that are NOT from the Windows Store. (It’s basically Microsoft’s equivalent to Apple’s App Store and the Google Play Store.) Another one is the inability to change the default search engine in the Microsoft Edge browser or change the default browser. I know this sounds disappointing but they’re basically taking Apple’s iOS approach. (External factors tend to ruin the experience for me. Look at why I get annoyed by Android OEMs.)
